Scratch Off latex

Scratch off latex, also known as rub removable or scratch off ink, is a popular feature that can be added to business cards. This opaque ink conceals the text or image below until you scratch it off, making it perfect for promotions, contests, and security codes. Scratch off latex can be applied on stocks ranging from 200gsm for posters up to 400gsm for business cards. The scratch off latex is typically available in silver or gold.

The process:

Both digital and lithographic printing methods are suitable for applying scratch off latex ink. After printing, a lottery release seal is applied to the scratch off areas to make the latex easy to scratch off with a coin, plectrum, or fingernail. Gloss or matt lamination can also be applied, if desired. The scratch off latex ink is usually applied last, after the lottery release seal has dried, although the sheets can be put back through the press if additional printing is required on top of the latex. This technique can be used for a variety of printed products, including business cards, posters, and scratch cards.

Potential pit falls

Poor adhesion of the scratch off ink or lamination and print set off.

Solutions:
Allow plenty of drying time. The print must be fully dry before the lottery release seal is applied and the lottery release seal must also have adequate drying time before the latex is applied.
The amount of drying time required will depend on many factors ranging from the weather to the ink saturation on the print so it’s important that the process isn’t rushed.
Choose the correct paper type – uncoated paper is unsuitable for scratch off latex inks due to its absorbency.

Solution:

When using scratch off latex on business cards, it’s important to choose a paper weight that will prevent the underlying image or text from showing through. To avoid any issues, it’s recommended to use a heavier weight stock and to avoid using highly colored images beneath the latex. If you do need to use a colored image, reducing the tint value in that area can help to prevent show through.

Solution:

To avoid show-through when using scratch off latex, the recommended color is 100% black. If colored text or images are needed, then the scratch off latex should be changed to white.

Scratch off areas are too close to each other

Solution:

The size and shape of the scratch off areas can be customized according to your preference. However, it is important to remember that the scratch off latex will extend beyond the designated area by approximately 2mm.
